The Curse of the Law
.....Like the household rules of our youth, the law of Moses coached the young nation in God’s ways. But it also carried penalties for those who broke those rules, as it was written: "Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them." (Galatians 3:10). This brought a special application in regard to tithing, which requires special mention:
....."Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings.
....."You are cursed with a curse, for you have robbed Me, even this whole nation.
....."Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try Me now in this," says the LORD of hosts, "If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it.
....."And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, so that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field," says the LORD of hosts;
....."And all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a delightful land," says the LORD of hosts."(Malachi 3:8-12)
.....In this passage, Malachi refers to tithing as it stood under the law, and this is the ‘curse’ that he mentions (see Malachi 4:4). But we must bear in mind that when Jesus died on the cross, He redeemed us from the curse of the law (Galatians 3:10-14).
.....Jesus’ death was the great watershed of mankind; the point when we came of age, no longer to be bound by the law or its curse (Galatians 4:4-5). But like Brandon in our example, the living values behind those laws should continue in our lives, ingrained in our hearts and minds so that we should not depart from them:
.....Jesus’ death was the great watershed of mankind; the point when we came of age, no longer to be bound by the law or its curse (Galatians 4:4-5). But like Brandon in our example, the living values behind those laws should continue in our lives, ingrained in our hearts and minds so that we should not depart from them:
.... "For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
.... "None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them.
.... "For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more."(Hebrews 8:8-12)
.... Therefore we do not make void the law through our faith. On the contrary, we establish the law; and it is fulfilled through a motivation of love for God Himself and for our fellow man (Romans 3:31; 13:8). We tithe, once again, for the reasons of Abraham.
